Purpose:

To ensure deactivation of machinery, equipment systems or processes during installation, repair, servicing and maintenance for purpose of achieving zero mechanical energy state or to prevent reactivation of other forms of energy present that would be hazardous in such operations through compliance with Ontario Reg.851, " The control of hazardous energy (LOCKOUT/TAGOUT)". The purpose of the standard is to cover the servicing and maintenance of machines and equipment in which the unexpected energization or start-up of machines or equipment, or release of stored energy could cause injury to a worker.
